UPDATE 16 February, 3:00 pm: Police have confirmed the motorcyclist who died in the weekend crash was not wearing protective gear.

At about 5:45 am on Sunday (15 February), the rider collided with the kerb in Giralang and passed away at the scene.

Det. Insp. Mark Steel of ACT Policing said residents reported hearing a loud crash immediately prior to the incident. "It’s a tragedy for the friends and family of the deceased, for the residents who were at the scene, and for the first responders who delivered life-saving treatment," he commented.

The investigation will examine a range of contributing factors, including speeding and impaired driving. "National data shows that speeding and impairment account for nearly two in three road fatalities each year," he noted. The Major Collision Team spent considerable time at the scene yesterday, gathering measurements and information that will inform the report to the Coroner.

Det. Insp. Steel described the incident as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety, especially for vulnerable road users. He urged Canberrans to be cautious and to adhere to safety practices on the roads.

Police are asking anyone with information or witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers. They also reminded the public that ACT Policing accepts reports of dangerous driving in real time via its online portal at region.com.au.

15 February, 5:00 pm: Canberra records its fourth road death of 2026 when a motorcyclist died after colliding with the kerb. The incident occurred in Giralang, Canberra’s north, around 5:45 am.

Emergency responders found a 24-year-old man who was declared deceased at the scene. ACT Policing’s Major Collision Team is leading the investigation. Witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage are urged to come forward. A Coroner’s report will follow.

Context: Earlier in January, a fatal two-vehicle collision occurred on the Monaro Highway near Royalla, and a four-year-old pedestrian was killed in Mawson. A separate single-vehicle crash in O’Malley resulted in a woman’s death and a man’s hospitalization after a tree impact.
