Cavs' Undermanned Roster Falls Short: Chicago Bulls Dominate, 136-125 (2026)

The Cavaliers' Season is in Free Fall, and It’s Time to Sound the Alarm

The Cleveland Cavaliers are in a tailspin, and Friday night’s 136-125 loss to the Chicago Bulls was just the latest chapter in a troubling narrative. This marks their third consecutive defeat and their eighth in the last 11 games, leaving them with a 15-14 record and clinging to the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference. But here’s where it gets even more concerning: the Bulls, who now hold a modest 12-15 record, have managed to secure two of their three wins since November 23 against the Cavs—both within the last 48 hours. Is this a sign of deeper issues within the Cavaliers' strategy and roster depth?

Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson didn’t mince words post-game, pointing to systemic problems in their style of play. “This style of play has hurt us this year,” he said. “It’s kind of the style of the East right now. A lot of teams play this way, and we didn’t do a good job slowing them down tonight. Not good enough.” But is it just the style, or is there something more fundamental at play? Are the Cavs simply outmatched, or is their approach betraying their strengths?

The game itself was a rollercoaster. Despite starting with a spirited 11-0 run, led by first-time starter Tyrese Proctor’s six points, the Cavs couldn’t sustain their momentum. The Bulls caught up by the 6:45 mark of the first quarter and took control in the second, ending the half with an 11-point lead. The Cavs showed glimpses of fight, reclaiming the lead briefly in the third quarter amid boos from the home crowd, but it lasted a mere 67 seconds. Even a 44-point third quarter wasn’t enough to secure the win, as Chicago pulled away in the final minutes, outscoring Cleveland 21-10.

And this is the part most people miss: The Cavs were severely undermanned, with key players like Donovan Mitchell, Craig Porter Jr., Evan Mobley, Sam Merrill, Larry Nance Jr., and Max Strus sidelined due to injuries or illness. In a last-ditch effort, two-way forward Luke Travers was called up from the G League, arriving in Cleveland just two hours before tipoff. While he contributed four points in five minutes, it wasn’t nearly enough to fill the void.

Darius Garland led the charge with a season-high 35 points, and Proctor added 16, but the Bulls’ balanced attack—led by Nikola Vucevic and Matas Buzelis, each with 24 points—proved too much. Chicago shot 52% from the field and 38.3% from three-point range, while dishing out 34 assists and dominating the paint with 58 points.

“We couldn’t stop them tonight,” Atkinson admitted. “I liked our camaraderie, I loved our spirit on the bench, but at the end of the day, you score 125 points and that should be enough. That was the deflating part of it.” Is the problem the defense, the offense, or something deeper in the team’s chemistry?

Jarrett Allen remained optimistic, noting, “I know we lost, but I think throughout the whole game, the effort was there. We fought back and tried to get back into the game. That’s what we need. I think that’s going to be the turnaround for this team.” But with the Cleveland faithful booing for the fourth time in five games, the question remains: How much longer can the Cavs afford to weather this storm?

As the team heads into a weekend break before hosting Charlotte on Monday, the pressure is mounting. The metaphor of dark clouds rolling in feels all too fitting. What changes need to be made to turn this season around? Is it a matter of adjustments, or does this team need a complete overhaul? Let us know your thoughts in the comments—this is a conversation that’s sure to spark debate.
