Coco Gauff is gearing up for her debut title run in Doha, and the excitement is palpable! As she embarks on this journey, the two-time Grand Slam champion aims to rebound from a disappointing exit at the Australian Open, where she faced a tough loss against Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.
Just one week after suffering a lopsided defeat with scores of 1-6, 2-6, Gauff arrives at the first WTA 1000 event of the year as the No. 4 seed, filled with determination.
In the Doha tournament, Gauff has been granted a bye in the first round, which gives her a little breathing room. Looking ahead, her potential opponents in the second round and the round of 16 are world No. 33 McCartney Kessler and the 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova, respectively.
If she advances deep into the tournament, she could face some tough competition, including the eighth-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova in the quarterfinals and the second seed, reigning Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina, in the semifinals.
Should Gauff secure a spot in her first-ever final in Doha, she might find herself up against formidable rivals such as top seed Iga Swiatek or third-seeded Amanda Anisimova.
It's worth noting that in her previous appearances at the Qatar Open, the 21-year-old has faced early exits, having left the competition in the second round twice and the quarterfinals on two occasions.
Reflecting on her recent performance, Gauff is eager to shake off the disappointment of her Australian Open showing. She ended the match against Svitolina with a staggering five double faults, 26 unforced errors, and lost her serve six times, managing only three winners. After what many consider one of her most challenging Grand Slam defeats, Gauff candidly acknowledged that her game just wasn’t clicking.
"Typically, when my opponent raises their game, I can elevate mine in response, but today, I fell short," she expressed honestly. "After losing a set 6-1, you think, 'Alright, let’s reset.' But then, when I found myself down 3-0 in the second set, I was relieved to finally win a game. It felt like I was unable to execute the things I usually do well. I tried to maintain a positive attitude, but nothing seemed to be working for me," Gauff shared after the match.
With her eyes set on winning in Doha, or at least making a significant run, this opportunity could be just the remedy Gauff needs to restore her confidence.
