In the world of sports, where legacies are often built on the shoulders of famous family names, the Gauff siblings are carving their own paths to glory. While Coco Gauff, the tennis phenom, has already etched her name into the history books with her Grand Slam triumphs, her brother, Codey, is now stepping into the spotlight as a baseball prospect with aspirations of his own.
The annual MLB Draft Combine, held at Chase Field, showcased a myriad of familiar last names, many belonging to the offspring of baseball royalty. But among them, Codey Gauff stood out, not just for his athletic prowess but for the curiosity his famous surname sparked.
"At the end of the day, I'm myself," Codey asserted, expressing his desire to establish his own identity beyond the shadow of his celebrated sister. Despite being four years her junior, Codey has been a constant support system for Coco, witnessing her rise from a late childhood sensation to an early adulthood star.
The timing of Codey's invitation to the combine was serendipitous, falling just a week before Coco's return to the hallowed grass courts of Wimbledon. It's a tournament that holds special significance for the Gauff family, as it was here that Coco's star first rose seven years ago.
"She wants me to go as far as I can," Codey said of his sister's support. "It's a blessing to have siblings striving for the same dreams. We're both trying to be something great."
Codey, an athletic switch-hitter with a strong throwing arm, has committed to the University of Missouri. However, his attendance at the combine leaves open the possibility of turning pro if drafted at a desirable spot.
"I want to play in the big leagues, whichever route that takes me," he said, echoing the ambition that drives many young athletes.
Kerrick Jackson, the head coach at Missouri, who first recruited Codey at a showcase two years ago, understands the unique challenges Codey faces. "I get it, but I don't want him to be known as Coco Gauff's brother," Jackson said. "It's something he's dealt with his entire life."
While Coco may be the more famous sibling at present, the support between the siblings is mutual. Coco has leaned on Codey for mental resets during pivotal moments in her career, and Codey, in turn, has taken Coco's advice to heart, learning the importance of leadership as a catcher.
"She upset the world there," Codey said, reflecting on Coco's breakthrough victory over Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2019. Now, as the siblings grow into their own athletic journeys, their parents, Corey and Candi, are spread across the globe, supporting their children's dreams.
But Codey believes the most successful athlete in the family will be their youngest brother, Cameron, who, at 13, is already making a name for himself in football.
"He has no other choice, really," Codey said with a smile, leaving us with a tantalizing glimpse into the future of the Gauff sports dynasty.
