FOG Architecture's Beijing Spa: A Multi-Sensory Healing Experience at YUSPA (2026)

Get ready to dive into a sensory journey like no other! FOG Architecture, a Chinese studio, has crafted a unique spa experience in Beijing that goes beyond the ordinary.

But here's where it gets controversial... While many spas aim for a tranquil, quiet environment, FOG Architecture dares to challenge this notion. They've created a space that engages your senses, offering a multi-dimensional healing journey.

The YUSPA retail spa, nestled in Beijing's Sanlitun shopping district, invites you to step into a world of relaxation and immersion. With subtle transitions in lighting and materials, the design team has crafted an experience that's anything but ordinary.

"The design leads you on a journey, gradually easing you into a state of calm through thoughtful changes in light, materials, and circulation. Healing is at the heart of this concept," explains FOG Architecture.

And this is the part most people miss... It's not just about creating a 'quiet place'. FOG Architecture has envisioned a spatial experience that's rhythmic and distinct, engaging your senses on multiple levels.

As you enter, a long corridor unfolds, leading to a water feature that serves as a tranquil gateway. To your right, you'll find the product display area, and to your left, a cozy reception area with seating.

The reception area is a sight to behold, with a feature wall showcasing essential oils backlit for a captivating display. At the heart of the display area, a long copper table presents a range of ready-to-spray essential oils, while stone columns linked by copper shelves offer additional product displays.

Each treatment area is accessed via independent routes, ensuring privacy and an intimate experience. Every area comes equipped with changing rooms and showers for your convenience.

FOG Architecture reveals that lighting was their primary design tool in this project. In the public areas, bright lights highlight the presented products, while deeper within the spa, the lighting gradually dims, with only the floor illuminated in the most intimate spaces.

Sheer curtains and electric sliding doors serve as partitions, controlling light and ensuring privacy without fully closing off the space.

The materials used throughout the spa create a harmonious balance of warm and cool tones. A concrete base provides a continuous backdrop, while copper accents add highlights, and wooden furniture softens the atmosphere.

"The overall design is intentionally restrained and neutral, avoiding excessive decoration that could overwhelm the senses and disrupt the experience," says FOG Architecture.

The studio believes that engaging the visual, auditory, and olfactory senses allows customers to fully immerse themselves in the healing experience. The sound of flowing water from the water feature creates a relaxing atmosphere, and the aromas released from the display area table vary throughout the day, adding to the sensory journey.

FOG Architecture, founded by Zheng Yu and Zhan Di, has offices in Shanghai and Chongqing. Their portfolio includes a minimalist Shanghai residence and a unique mobile bakery with grain sack walls.

So, what do you think? Is this spa experience a step too far, or a brilliant innovation? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments! Let's spark a conversation about the future of spa design.
