A shocking revelation from a former leader: Disappointment in the very government he once supported. Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance of the Akufo-Addo administration, particularly in the period following the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an interview with Deloris Frimpong Manso, shared on X on December 6, 2025, former President Kufuor shared his perspective. He acknowledged that while the Akufo-Addo administration began with promise, things took a turn for the worse after the global health crisis.
He expressed that the government implemented policies without seeking his counsel, admitting that he struggled to understand many of the strategies employed by the now-ousted NPP administration.
But here's where it gets controversial... Kufuor believes that Akufo-Addo's leadership style contributed to the NPP's defeat in the 2024 general election. He pointed out the irony of the situation, stating, "During the 2016 election, they rode on my achievements to win power, but after they came into government, things changed… They started very well, but when COVID-19 came, things began to shift. I will commend him for how he handled the COVID-19 pandemic, but afterward, I didn’t understand many of the things they were doing."
He further elaborated on specific examples, stating, "Things like the bond market and the national cathedral… They didn’t consult me. All I knew was that they were building it. I initially thought it was a private initiative, only to later realize they were using government resources. They even demolished the judges’ building for it, and yet they still couldn’t complete it."
And this is the part most people miss... Despite his criticisms, Kufuor offered some advice to the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He urged them to remain united and stay true to their principles. He emphasized the importance of truth and transparency as crucial elements for the party's potential return to power. He stated, "They should stay true to themselves. They may not all be friends, but since they are bonded by the party’s principles, when it comes to the work, we should present a united front. That is what Ghanaians want."
What do you think? Do you agree with Kufuor's assessment of the Akufo-Addo administration? Do you believe that a lack of consultation and transparency contributed to the NPP's electoral defeat? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
