SODOM's TOM ANGELRIPPER Discusses Decision to Cut Down on Touring (2026)

The legendary German thrash metal band, SODOM, and its frontman, Tom Angelripper, have sparked a conversation about the challenges of touring, especially in the United States. In a recent interview, Angelripper shared his decision to scale back the band's touring activities, citing the high costs and logistical hurdles associated with playing shows in the US.

Angelripper, whose real name is Thomas Such, is a father of two grown children, and he wants to spend more quality time with his family and pursue other interests. He plans to focus on re-releases and writing new music, but touring has taken a backseat for now.

"It's a shame we haven't toured for our latest album, 'The Arsonist,'" Angelripper said. "Deciding to stop touring is never easy, but I'm enjoying my free time and doing things like hunting. I don't want to commit to a strict schedule for live performances anymore."

The band's decision to cut down on touring is not without financial consequences. SODOM will miss out on lucrative festival appearances in Germany and across Europe, which Angelripper acknowledges will result in significant financial losses. However, he is willing to sacrifice the income to prioritize his health and well-being.

"I'm 63 years old, and my doctor advised me to slow down and focus on other things. Being on stage is a huge part of my life, but I don't want to spend so much time traveling and dealing with the stress of touring."

One of the main challenges for international musicians like SODOM is the complex process of obtaining a US artist visa. Angelripper highlighted the extensive paperwork and financial costs involved, especially for a short run of shows.

"It's a lot of work and expense to get a visa for the US. And it's not just the band, but also the crew. We have our own crew for our equipment, and it's very different from American bands who can simply show up with their passports and play."

When asked if this break from touring is a full retirement, Angelripper was clear that it's not. He drew parallels to SLAYER's Tom Araya, who also took a break to spend more time with his family.

"I'm not thinking about retirement. I might do a few shows with SODOM in the future, but I don't want to commit to a specific timeline. My bandmates have their own projects and bands, and I'm enjoying my time off."

Angelripper's decision to step away from touring has allowed him to reconnect with his family and pursue his hobbies. He spends more time in his hunting district and enjoys a relaxed lifestyle without the pressures of a demanding tour schedule.

"I'm living without any pressure now. I can just sit, drink my coffee, and relax. It's a nice change from the constant stress of touring."

Despite his break from touring, Angelripper remains in demand, with booking requests and tour offers still coming in. He receives offers for SODOM tours and even for a potential 'Big Four' tour with KREATOR, DESTRUCTION, and TANKARD.

"People are still interested in seeing SODOM. We could book tours every day if we wanted to, but I'm taking a break to focus on myself and my loved ones."

Angelripper's decision to prioritize his health, family, and personal interests over the demands of the music industry is a bold move. It raises questions about the sustainability of intense touring schedules and the importance of work-life balance for musicians.

"I love my fans, but I also love myself and my family. It's time to stop and focus on other things. I'm still healthy and creative, but I don't know how long this break will last. It's a necessary pause to recharge and refocus."

What do you think about Angelripper's decision? Is it a wise move to prioritize health and family over the pressures of the music industry? Share your thoughts in the comments!
